Patterning Types, Techniques, Applications, Interior Design

Although patterning is typically thought of in terms of bold alternating stripes and shapes, with distinct contrasts between background and foreground - much like typical Harlequin diamond designs - it would be a mistake not to consider the entire family of pattern finishes for your next decorating project. Actually, two of the decorative arts' most popular faux finishes 'faux bois' and 'faux marbre', fall under the Patterning umbrella.

Striping & Harlequin

Okay, let's shed some light on this subject first. Not that there is anything wrong with strong patterns - we personally love them - but, Patterns, Harlequin diamonds and bold-striping patterns, in particular are not always bold. 'Sheen patterning' is a technique that involves painting patterns of the same color, but with differing sheen levels, creating a subtle and sophisticated look. Often times 'sheen patterns' go unnoticed until you begin to move about the space, and the contrast becomes apparent only with the movement of light. This finish is often used above chair rails, areas needing some 'height', and in dining rooms (in varying shades of red or green if you're looking to inspire the appetite!). Harlequin diamond patterns often extend from the ceiling right down to the floor, and can interestingly extend/carryover where walls join.

Mosaic & Brick

Who would have ever thought it possible to achieve a wonderfully charming mosaic appearance or a burly brick finish using creative faux finishing techniques? Don't have the patience to sit there putting each little tile in place? Well, neither do we. Think it's not fair that only those 'lofty types' get to have all that cool exposed brick and breakaway? We, don't either. Let Manido' Design help you achieve these creative features, inside - or outside - it's up to you!

Graining

Graining, or the art of 'faux bois' - faux wood - is one of the most requested faux finishes. Graining techniques mimic a variety of finished woods surfaces, providing significant cost savings to those who prefer to put their hard-earned money to use in ways that are more productive. Graining is a perfect solution for sprucing up those sterile generic pressboard cupboards found in many 'standard' construction projects. Some of the more popular types of wood graining include oak, burl wood, cherry, etc. (and we like to feature the little guys too… birch bark - as a favorite of Lisa's because it is reminiscent of her tribal land in Maniwaki, Quebec.)

Marbling

Ahhh… 'faux marbre'. We told you it would be a mistake to overlook the entire patterning family! Only for the most fortunate among us, you say? I say not. Now, this wonderful appearance is available to all who desire it, thru the highly creative use of faux finish techniques. Techniques developed by the decorative paint industry, along with a host of specialty materials and oil paints to produce the most realistic and extremely smooth stone FAUX finish possible. So you want it tomorrow you say? Unfortunately, this finish does require a bit of patience, and its techniques are not to be rushed - but trust us, your patience will be well rewarded - the results are fabulous!
